"Artists of the Southwest Visit Alamos"
After visiting Alamos, one can understand why it is such a popular place for southwestern artists. The unique climate and the blend of tropic and desert habitats creates a rich and vibrant setting in which Spanish colonial architecture lends exquisite scenes, appearing timeless and undiminished. The Moorish influence on the town's architecture is unmistakenable, reflecting a style from the Andalusian provinces of Seville and Cadiz in southern Spain. The predominant colonial mansions possess luxuriously planted gardens framed by patios and portales. Most importantly, the town elicits a charming personality, making it a favorite amongst artists. Richard Murphy spends a great deal of time painting in Mexico, sometimes as much as six months a year. "I find Mexico offers a lot to an artist. It is a beautiful country with wonderful people. I love the time I spend there. I feel very fortunate to be able to work in both Santa Fe and Mexico." Since 1986 Murphy has been showing in galleries throughout the Southwest. He has rapidly become one of the premier painters in the country. His paintings are in numerous private and corporate collections in the United States and abroad. In 1999, Murphy's oil painting "Casa de Santos" was selected from a group of dozens of submissions for the cover of the Santa Fe telephone directory.
